Helping One Person May Not Change The World
But it will change the world for that person ...

I haven't written a new blog post for some time as I’ve become the Queen of Procrastination, but just recently I had the most profound experience that has changed me in many ways ...
Helping one person may not change the world, but it could change the world for them ...

I had an hour to kill in Central Milton Keynes one afternoon and had every intention of treating myself to something nice. However, as I approached an underpass to the shops, I spotted a homeless man and woman sitting on cardboard.
As I approached them, they very politely asked if I had any spare change. I stopped and introduced myself, asked them their names and if I could sit with them for a moment.
"They were so happy that I wanted to take a few minutes just to speak with them!"
We started talking, and I heard the most heart-breaking stories. Claire had lost both her children in a car accident and Christian had lost his wife too. We spoke about the terrible blows that life had dealt them but what struck me was just how determined they both were to turn their lives around.
They spend each night sleeping outside unless they can get the £10 they need to have a bed for the night at a local shelter. They can't get benefits as they don't have a permanent address and they can't get work either for the same reason.
Every week they must go the council offices to see if somewhere to live has been found for them, but every week the answer is no. Christian has been living like this since May! They are terrified of the prospect of a British Winter.
I asked them if I could get them some food and was stunned when Christian said that he only wanted a burger as his stomach has shrunk so much he wouldn't be able to keep more than that down. If he ate too much it would only make him hungrier later. Claire longed for ice cream. They have a bowl of soup most days, but not every day.
So, I went to McDonalds and bought some food and when I gave it to them they were beyond grateful. I then gave them the money to have a bed for the night and they cried. Christian cried because he knew how important it was for Claire to have a shower and that was more important to him than anything. In his own words "it's so important for a woman to feel clean."
"I felt so humbled being with these two for such a short time and it put any worries I have into some context!"
When I left, they asked if I would talk to them again. They said they don't want money but would just love me to spend time talking to them ... just to make them feel human again. This got me thinking, and has made me stop and consider what kind of impact the smallest of gestures can have.
I’ve since joined Help The Homeless MK and spent an evening on the soup and donation run. Now I’ve passed my induction and I'll be getting more regularly involved.
I am fortunate in so many ways, and I love that my business enables me to help business owners achieve their vision and minimise the stress in their own lives. Some of my clients see me as a coach, a mentor, a consultant and some even as therapist.
Feeling lost, not knowing which way to turn, is a feeling that many of us have experienced at some point in our lifetime.
There can be many contributory factors: stress at work, money worries, relationship issues, illness, bereavement, unemployment ... this list goes on. Everyone has a story to tell and most of us are carrying around some baggage, but most of us have become experts at masking our pain.
"So, what can you do to make a difference to your customers, your staff, your friends and family, or even a stranger?"
You may feel that helping one person may not change the world, but it doesn’t cost a penny to take a few minutes to stop and just chat with someone. If you can help them in some small way, it will certainly change the world for them.
Until next time ...
