You can use marketing to tell your potential customers your story!

So here I am, sitting in a classroom, whilst my fellow delegates are eating lunch in the restaurant and I'm writing this week's blog post. I'm attending a fantastic, yet incredibly intensive, 3-day workshop on Marketing!

The use of state-of-the-art equipment has made this an invaluable experience. We are drilling down to the core of all aspects of marketing, and in this day and age, it is an ever evolving subject matter. I will share some of this knowledge with you throughout next month.
If you've read my previous blog posts you will understand the importance of doing marketing properly – which unfortunately is something that the majority of owner-managed businesses struggle with.
When I speak to a client for the first time, their number one issue is the need to increase sales and the frustration of not getting them. So I ask them "what do you think marketing truly is?" and they struggle to answer. Can you?
However, I get a variety of responses, but two of the biggest myths are:
It is too expensive to market properly
It takes too much time to do it properly
Yes, It can be expensive if all you are doing is throwing money at advertising when you haven't even established who your target market is and where you should be targeting. Yes, It can be an absolute waste of time putting your energy into unqualified activities, with no marketing plan.
I just want to give you something to think about ...
What are your website and marketing materials doing for your prospective buyers?
In my view, the biggest mistake made is thinking that your website is purely a vehicle for telling the world what you do when you should be telling the world what a difference your business can make to them!
How do you make people listen to what you can do for them?
From childhood we were told stories and would listen avidly as we were transported into another world ... in adulthood that hasn't changed, we still read books, but we also absorb information through films, documentaries and advertising!
No one likes to be lectured, yet when we are trying to promote our businesses, invariably that is what we end up doing, without realising it. We need to do more than state all that we do. We need to do more than tell them that they will be getting a professional, quality service or product – that should be a given!
Let them into your world and show them how you can change theirs!
So tell your potential customers your story and help them see how your business can make a difference to them. Tell them how you understand what they need and give them the solution. Sounds simple and that's because it is, but it does require some thought.
By taking the time to understand why people would need to buy from you and what their concerns/issues could possibly be, you will be able to tell them what solution you have for them. Give them a happy ever after and they will come back wanting more!
