An Effective Leader Is Always A Good Communicator

If you're not a good communicator, it may be time to try a little mediation!

Whether you're talking with your team, your business partners, your customers or your suppliers, you need to not only give clear instruction but also to listen intently as well. You have two ears and one mouth for a very good reason.
The best leaders will spend more time listening than they do talking, but their conversations will always ensure that the recipient feels like they are being heard, are understood and leave the conversation feeling appreciated.
The adage of "actions speak louder than words" applies in many circumstances, but as we have seen with the recent EU Referendum, words can also be incredibly damaging if not used in the right context or conveyed in the most appropriate way.
If you recognise that poor communication is causing stress or conflict in your world, then do get someone to mediate the conversations between you and your teams, partners, customers or suppliers.

We all have different 'internal representation systems', based on our past experiences, that allow us to process the world around us. The words that come naturally to one person can be completely alien to others and this can cause frustration, stress and conflict.
If we were having a face-to-face conversation and I was to say "I see what you mean", it may not register with you if you were expecting me to say "I hear what you're saying" and this could easily lead to a misunderstanding.
"I was using 'visual' representations, and you were expecting to hear 'auditory' ones!"
